Make space for all the bouquets Mr. Tyrewala !!!

You know that feeling when you're watching a movie and you go 'WAH KYA dialogue hai!!!' or 'What a beautiful shot' or Wow, I love what she is wearing!!!'. Well, Abbas Tyrewala's directorial debut 'Jaane Tu..Ya Jaane Na' doesn't have ANY such moments.

And thats the beauty of this immensely charming and oh-so-refreshingly cute piece of cinema.

Nothing...ABSOLUTELY NOTHING distracts you from what is the most important part of any film...the story...the 'SCRIPT' (and what a lovely one at that).

The thing that works big time for the movie is the way the characters have been written. Each and every person you see on screen is so real that you start believing you know these people. They could be the gang of friends right next to you in the college canteen...Hell they could be YOUR gang of friends :) And what totally catapults these extremaly well written and etched out characters onto a different league all together...is the perfect casting of each and every one of them. You totally forget that any of them are ...well...acting!!! They all seem to BE the characters that they are portraying and thats something very difficult to come by in the performance of an entire ensemble cast.

The fact that Abbas Tyrewala is a writer par excellence, is something everyone is aware of, but he is as good, if not better, a director. The simplicity and restraint with which he narrates this beautifully layered story deserves all the praise in the world.

Another factor that helps the movie to a great extent, is that at no poi
nt does it seem like its a 'launch vehicle' for Imran Khan [who, lemme tell you makes a brilliant acting debut, and the fact that he is super cute only helps :) ] There isn't a single frame in the movie where you could say 'Oh...they are trying to display his talent for this...or that'. Its a story of two friends and their own course towards understanding their own relationship. And that is exactly what every minute of screen time works towards. Also it has to be seen to be believed, how effortlessly the narrative juxtaposes a completely real and relatable world of the characters with a completely fantasy driven element that forms the super funny cameo track of Naseeruddin Shah.

While everyone is going to yak a LOT about Imran and Genelia and how good they are in the movie ( and they are...they REALLY are), I'd like to specially mention Ratna Pathak Shah, who plays Imran's mom in the film. The lady is a treat to watch onscreen and it makes you wonder why we don't see her on the big screen more often. Along with her, there is Prateek Babbar, who plays Genelia's brother. This boy is a complete natural and takes your breath away with his absolutely effortless performance. Surely a talent I'd be looking forward to see on the silver screen in the near future.

On the whole, 'Jaane Tu.. Ya Jaane Na' totally and completely belongs to the vision and creative genius of Abbas Tyrewala and is undoubtedly the BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR so far !!! Whats next Abbas ?
Can't wait !!! :)

Well I agree Taran that the movie has a good script, and the characters are sketched and then protrayed beautifully, what I find that movie a little bit slow sometimes and yes Songs were definately not par excellence. Except Aditi and to a certain extent Pappu can't dance saala. none of have were had an impact on the movie.
Also if you gave it a thought, it is just a one time watch movie thats it.. !!! So in short I am not that impressed by Tyrewaala

Well, your review is a good example of how mediocrity is celebrated in our country.
In this well intentioned film, the paper thin characters are poorly etched & the events in the story are neither logical nor based on any sensible psychological causality.
You are a Film Student and are exposed to pretty good cinema from all around.
You would be better advised to improve your cinematic standards before you start gushing about such average fare.

Oh Oh Oh my dear Sankalp Sir,

Well to be honest I think most of the films that are shown to us in the name of 'Good world Cinema' are boring as fuck and make me want to pull my hair out. Not that none of them are bearable but most of them are just utter trash and them being praised is a phenomena I'd call
'Celebration of non sense'. And let me just assure you that I totally support every film that has the power to make me feel for the characters in it. So at the end of the day, all I care about,is whether the film told me a story in an entertaining manner or not. And 'Jaane Tu..Ya Jaane Na', is one of the most entertaining films I've seen in a long time. I totally understand someone not agreeing with me...but allow me a right to my opinion, just I allow you yours.

Yes, I am a film making student...but I am the most Pro-popular cinema film student you'll ever come across, and I am really sorry if you think the kind of films I like are mediocre. Maybe in a 100 years my small and unintelligent brain will evolve enough to understand the kind of cinema that you term intelligent...but till then...I'll merrily and might I add 'PROUDLY' celebrate what you call 'mediocrity'. Thanks for visiting the blog though, Do visit again...at your own risk :)
