The students at my institute, i.e., Whistling Woods International, were in for a treat as they were visited for a special guest lecture by the supremely talented actress – Tabu. Dressed in an elegant salwar suit, Tabu was warmth personified as she spoke to the students about her experience of working in Indian as well as International cinema.
On being showered with lavish praises by the students for her acting powress, she floored one and all by her statement, “I am not a great actress, I am still getting the hang of what acting is all about”.
She talked to us about how she prepares for different characters that she plays so convincingly and effortlessly on screen. She spoke about the importance of ‘Listening’ to the director’s instructions without any preconceived notions and how by just doing so, half the battle of delivering a convincing performance is won. She also talked about how by simply observing different people around you, one can grow as a performer and a film maker.
When someone asked about her thoughts on her early days in the industry, she surprised everyone by a blatantly honest answer, “When I came into the industry, acting was all about glamour for me. I was young and like any other newcomer wanted nothing more than to look glamorous and pretty onscreen.” A statement like that certainly came as a pleasant surprise considering that today she is one of those rare actresses who are known more for their nuanced performances than an ultra glamorous image associated with a Bollywood star. It was a memorable day indeed.
